Defining and Setting Your Goals are Keys to Success

In a study done in a major American university in the 1940s, graduating students were asked how many of them had written down their goals, and the corresponding action plans to achieve those goals. After following up 20 years later, it was found that 3 percent of the people who had written their goals had a net worth greater than the remaining 97 percent combined.

According to one source, they’re happier, healthier, and have far better relationships than those who didn’t use an effective goal-setting plan. This should get people thinking about the importance of defining and setting goals. People have to really think about what they want; this is the first step to setting solid and believable goals. Whether you ponder on the question silently or speak it aloud, the important thing is to bring the query to conscious minds.

Asking this question starts the process of realizing goals. Consider important elements in your life, from family, business, and physical well-being to spirituality and financial goals. Then proceed to write these goals down. Think of using the three “Ps”: write them in the present tense; formulate them in the form of a positive Statement, and keep in mind as you jot them down that these are personal goals that reflect what you value most.

As you write your goals down, shut out all unnecessary stimuli: turn off the TV, put away your phone, and sit down in a comfortable, conducive area. Imagine what you can accomplish in this dream list and commit to finishing the list by a certain date. Again, the important first step in goal-setting is to get started now and to not be overwhelmed by the prospect of creating your list. Only begin; the rest will follow.
